<p>The group health insurance rates at my day job increased 33% this year, after rising just over 30% last year. I have a family of three, and the new health insurance rates are now 11% of my salary, which in my opinion, is too high (while I won’t disclose my actual salary, I will state that I earn a fair amount). The new health insurance rates made me think about getting individual health insurance for my family.</p>
<p>Group vs. individua<span id="more-534"></span>l health insurance? Before we go further, it is important to understand the difference between individual health insurance and group health insurance. Basically, group health insurance plans guarantee all members of the group coverage, regardless of their health risk. Because coverage is guaranteed with group plans, they can be more expensive for relatively healthy individuals than an individual plan, which is priced based on your specific health history. In my case, my family and I are healthy, so it is a good idea to investigate individual health insurance options.<br />Determine your health insurance needs to find the best plan</p>
<p>When comparing health insurance plans, it’s important to make sure you are not only comparing apples to apples, but also getting the best plan for your needs. Make sure you get the best health insurance plan for your needs, whether that is an HMO plan, PPO plan, high deductible health insurance plan with a health savings account, hybrid, or other. <p>One of the biggest concerns among the self employed individuals is health insurance costs, which can be expensive. Some self-employed individuals may be eligible for a group health insurance plan if they meet certain criteria, or they may be eligible for other health benefits, such as COBRA benefits. For example, if you are leaving a traditional job to become self-employed, you may be eligible for COBRA. If you are not leaving a job that offers health insurance, then ignore the tip regarding COBRA coverage.</p>

<p>Keeping the nails clipped is important. If not kept at the proper length, pet’s claws can grow into its pads. Have your vet show you how if you have never trimmed.</p>
<p>Meds! Never give your pet any medication without the consent of your vet. Many common human drugs (such as Tylenol) are poisonous to pet.</p>
<p> One thing you may want to know more about is what foods are dangerous to your dog.</p>
<p>Many people are unaware that some of the foods that we eat on regular basis can be deadly to your dog.</p>
<p>A piece of chocolate can cause seizures, coma and death.</p>
<p>Even a small piece of chocolate is dangerous.</p>
<p>Anything containing caffeine can have a similar effect and be as dangerous as chocolate, and that includes coffee grounds, tea, and tea bags.</p>
<p>Grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure and even a single serving of raisins can kill your dog.</p>
<p>Excessive salt intake can also cause kidney problems.</p>
<p>Onions can cause anemia by destroying red blood cells while tomatoes can cause tremors and heart arrhythmias.</p>
<p>Tomato plants are particularly toxic to dogs.</p>
<p>Avocados are also highly toxic and can cause breathing difficulty and fluid accumulation around the abdomen chest and heart.</p>
<p>When giving your dog bones ensure that they are raw as cooked bones can splinter and damage their internal organs.</p>
<p>Excessive fat can cause pancreatitis, so it is not wise to feed your dog a diet of fatty foods.</p>
<p>Fried foods also fall into this category and are not good to retain maximum health in your dog.</p>
<p>Certain nuts, such as Macadamia nuts and walnuts can cause weakness and muscle tremors.</p>
<p>Peanut butter however is generally okay provided you use the salt and sugar free peanut butter as sugar can encourage cancer growth.</p>
<p>The core and pits of fruits such as Apple's cherries and peaches contain cyanide, which is poisonous to dogs and can kill them within 24-hours without warning.</p>
<p>If in doubt, always refrain from feeding your dog foods that we are eating assuming that they will be okay.</p>
<p>What is safe for humans can kill your dog within hours.</p>
<p>Call you’re Vet if any abnormalities are detected during these check.</p>

<p>When you are going through breast cancer, it is an emotionally and physically trying time.  Many forms of cancer treatment only add to the problem as they work toward curing the cancer.  Radiation treatments, for example, can cause a great deal of fatigue and it can take up to two months for your normal levels of energy to return.  Therefore, it is important to follow a few health tips for breast cancer patients in order to minimize these side<span id="more-564"></span> effects, as well as to help you get well sooner. </p>
<p>#1 of the Health Tips for Breast Cancer Patients:  Get Rest</p>
<p>One of the most important things you can do for yourself while fighting breast cancer is to get plenty of rest.  Do your best to get a full night's sleep.  And, if you feel tired during the day, take the time to sleep or rest to allow your body time to recover.</p>
<p>#2 of Health Tips for Breast Cancer Patients:  Eat Healthy</p>
<p>Eat a health diet.  The healthier your body is, the better prepared it will be to fight the breast cancer and to recover from breast cancer treatment.  Be sure to include plenty of protein in your diet because the amino acids found in protein are used by your body to help repair damage.</p>
<p>Sometimes, eating can be a difficult task if you are undergoing treatments for breast cancer.  Surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and medications can adversely affect your appetite and digestive system.  You might experience nausea, vomiting, changes in taste and smell, difficulty swallowing and chewing, constipation, and pain.  If you are experiencing these problems, you need to take steps to increase your appetite and to make eating easier.  </p>
<p>First, try to make mealtime enjoyable by eating with friends and family or making eating as comfortable as possible.  If ok with your physician, you might also have a small glass of wine, a mixed drink, or a beer.  To add variety for your taste buds and to make eating more enjoyable, try new foods or new recipes.  Better yet, eat out more often, even if you just eat an appetizer.  If you engage in mild exercise ½ hour before you eat, it can also help increase your appetite.  Of course, you should check with your doctor before starting any type of exercise routine.  Anti-nausea medicine can also be helpful if you are vomiting or experiencing nausea.</p>
<p>It is also helpful if you prepare meals ahead of time while you are feeling better and freeze them.  These meals can be easily reheated when you are not feeling well.  You should also keep small snacks on hand to munch on when you are feeling good enough to eat.  In fact, it is best to eat small meals or snacks frequently throughout the day than to eat large meals.  All foods you purchase should be easy to prepare or should be ready to eat.  You should also look for foods that are high in calories and protein in order to help keep your weight on.  Even the fluids you consume should be high in calories and protein.  If you are having a hard time chewing and swallowing, you should puree your foods or purchase foods that are easy to swallow, such as applesauce, soup, baby food, macaroni and cheese, pudding, and yogurt. </p>

<p>If you are undergoing external beam radiation, you may experience skin irritation or sensitivity.  To assist with this problem, you should avoid using talcum powder, soaps, and deodorants.  When you wash, be gentle and do not scrub or rub the area.  Extreme hot or cold temperatures can also be problematic to your skin.  </p>
<p>Therefore, tight or restrictive clothing can also aggravate your skin, as can nylon and synthetic materials.  Wear loose clothing made of cotton instead.  In addition, if you need to tape bandages to your skin, use paper tape rather than adhesive tape. </p>
<p>By following these health tips for breast cancer patients, you will be able to keep up your strength and be better prepared to beat this disease.  In addition, you can actually help boost your body's immune system and its ability to make you better.</p>

<p>Keeping health insurance after a layoff without government assistance would eat up 72 cents of every dollar of unemployment benefits for average Kansas workers and their families.</p>
<p>And the expiration of such assistance in the federal stimulus act threatens to push millions of laid-off workers nationwide into the ranks of the uninsured.</p>
<p>Those are the conclusions of a new report by Families USA, a Washington-based nonprofit,<span id="more-555"></span> nonpartisan group that advocates for health consumers.</p>
<p>The report, which will be released today in Washington, expresses concern over the expiration of a health-insurance benefit — funded by federal stimulus dollars — for workers laid off between March and December of this year.</p>
<p>Ordinarily, workers who leave a job can continue to receive coverage from their former employer's insurance plan under a law known as "COBRA" — the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act.</p>
<p>But COBRA coverage is expensive because the displaced worker has to pay the full premium, including what had been the employer's share of the cost.</p>
<p>Under the federal economic stimulus bill, the government agreed to pick up 65 percent of the cost of COBRA coverage for as much as nine months for workers displaced by the ongoing economic recession.</p>
<p>But eligibility expired Monday for the first workers to get the COBRA assistance, those who joined the program in March.</p>
<p>And, as the law is currently framed, workers laid off after Dec. 31 will not receive any government help with their COBRA costs.</p>
<p>An estimated 7 million laid-off workers nationwide took advantage of the COBRA-assistance offer.</p>
<p>The exact number of Kansans affected is not available. Federal and state labor, insurance and tax officials could not provide a state-by-state breakdown.</p>
<p>Cost to laid-off Kansans</p>
<p>Families USA analyzed how losing the government assistance will affect individual families.</p>
<p>According to its report, the average cost of insuring a family through COBRA is $369 a month with the government subsidy.</p>
<p>Without it, that cost rises to an average of $1,054 a month — a $685 difference.</p>
<p>The average unemployment benefit in Kansas is $1,465, meaning that without the COBRA subsidy, health insurance alone would consume 71.9 percent of an unemployed family's income, Families USA calculated.</p>
<p>Ending the subsidy will mean "putting continued health coverage out of reach for most families," Families USA concluded.</p>
<p>Congress is considering a bill to extend the COBRA subsidy, said Molly Haase, an aide to Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan.</p>
<p>Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, has introduced Senate Bill 2730 to extend COBRA subsidy eligibility through June 20, 2010.</p>
<p>The bill also would reduce the unemployed worker's co-payment from 35 percent to 25 percent and extend benefit eligibility from nine months to 15 months, Haase said.</p>
<p>The bill is before the Senate Finance Committee, she said.</p>
<p>Losing the government benefit would make it extremely difficult — in many cases impossible — for laid-off Kansans to continue to provide health coverage for their families, said Bob Brewer, Midwest director for the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace.</p>
<p>In Kansas, layoffs of SPEEA's workers didn't start until October, so its members will continue to receive benefits for several more months, Brewer said.</p>
<p>However, he added that he expects more layoffs in early 2010 at Boeing and Spirit AeroSystems, and he hopes the COBRA subsidy will be reinstated in time for those workers to continue coverage.</p>
<p>Clinics already burdened</p>
<p>An increase in uninsured Kansans would put more pressure on already heavily burdened low-cost clinics in Wichita.</p>
<p>Dave Sanford, executive director of GraceMed in Wichita, said his clinic is already seeing a rise in patients that is outstripping its ability to get enough providers to serve them.</p>
<p>Even with COBRA subsidies available, many displaced workers are "basically rolling the dice, hoping they don't have a catastrophic problem until they get called back or they get another job," he said.</p>
<p>For now, GraceMed is dealing with the crunch by setting appointment times for people with more urgent health problems and extending the wait to get an appointment for routine care, Sanford said.</p>
<p>The clinic also is trying to find doctors willing to moonlight at the clinic in the evenings and on weekends, he said.</p>
<p>People who find their COBRA expiring can comparison shop to try to find a lower-cost policy, said Bob Hanson of the state Insurance Department.</p>
<p>The department maintains a list of insurers licensed to sell medical coverage in Kansas at <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://www.ksinsurance.org/consumers/majmed.htm." target="_blank">www.ksinsurance.org/consumers/majmed.htm.</a></p>
<p>The department also is warning consumers to be wary of companies marketing health plans that seem unrealistically cheap, Hanson said.</p>
<p>"Many companies writing very limited health policies, or noninsurance discount plans, are finding a market for those desperate for low-cost insurance," Hanson said.</p>
